Leadership

A look into
the Central Michigan SMTC from the basement hallway of Ronan Hall.
|
The
SMTC leadership includes the director, outreach coordinators, and secretary
who work with district administrators, teachers, and parents. This team
coordinates professional development among the districts. The leadership
seeks funding through grant writing to provide initiatives in science,
mathematics, and technology education. The team serves as a liaison
between the Michigan Department of Education and the school districts.
Pullout programs
serve academically gifted students in science through Intermediate
Interdisciplinary Science (IIS). In addition, the SMTC supports Science
Olympiad teams at all levels. Summer Science & Mathematics Camps
are offered for PreK-8 students in July each year.
StarLab
(portable planetarium) programs
are provided to school districts, enhancing the science curriculum.
The
SMTC assists K-12 districts in aligning their mathematics and science
curricula with national and state standards by providing inservice workshops
and consultant services. Many standards-based curricular materials are
available for teacher use as the SMTC participates in state and national
curriculum projects. The SMTC provides teachers access to the Internet
and the resources available through NASA.
Growing
partnerships with community agencies provide insights into the needs
of our state and nation in science and mathematics education. The SMTC
coordinates projects conducted in public schools, scouts, 4-H, Forest
Hill Nature Area and Neithercut Woodland. The SMTC is eager to offer programming that meets
the needs of parents and the surrounding community.

Professional
Development
Professional development is provided through intensive, year-long
inservice programs in both math and science. The SMTC hosts a series
of workshops and summer offerings to introduce new techniques and
curricular materials. Opportunities for professional growth include
workshops such as Math Academy and HS-MASS..
Resources
housed at the IMC, along with those at the Clare-Gladwin RESD and the
Gratiot-Isabella RESD, provide a wide range of media and print materials
for classroom use. Internet access is available for teachers for educational
purposes. In addition, the SMTC serves as a Regional NASA Educator Resource
Center, giving area educators access to posters, photographs, activities,
slides, and videos developed by NASA.
